Another Cancer Charity Fraud: Will It Ever End?

By Gary Snyder

State and federal authorities have accused a Bronx nonprofit of diverting more than $700,000 intended for cancer screening for travel, gambling and shopping sprees by its founder.

State Comptroller and U.S. Attorney say the Cancer Service Network Inc. obtained 18 government contracts for more than $25 million to administer screening programs for low-income patients from 2008 to 2011.

Authorities say 48-year-old Joseph Junkovic billed the state health department for thousands of hours he didn't work. He was charged Wednesday in federal court in Manhattan with fraud.

Auditors found he claimed to have worked on multiple contracts simultaneously for some months and was billing for up to 21 hours a day for his services. (source)
