Lack of Charity Oversight Leaves Public Confidence Down

This month’s Chronicle of Philanthropy has a series of articles under “Confidence Gap,” referring to a survey that found 1 in 3 Americans lacks faith in charities.

• ·       % of agencies that do a good job of helping people has fallen
• ·       top donors concern: “how organization uses my money”
• ·       35% said that they have “not too much” in confidence in charities or “none at all”
• ·       15% say they have a “great deal” of confidence in charities

The lead article notes the lack of oversight by the IRS and by state charity regulators and the voluntary nature of codes of conduct -- and the lack of any expectations that government oversight will be improving in the foreseeable future. 

The sector leadership believes that oversight should remain the same.

A worrisome trend.
