Three Long Island charities, their accountant, and the fundraising firm that got most of their donated revenue have agreed to pay $500,000 to settle a case brought by state officials, Newsday reports.
Bi-County Helpline for Abuse Against Women and Children, Breast Cancer Funds for Research, and anti-hunger group Long Island Responds raised $2.2-million via for-profit solicitor Mure Associates from 2007 to 2012 but put only $53,000 toward their missions, authorities said.
Mure, which was co-founded by a late relative of two of the charities’ heads, received more than 80 percent of contributions. All three of the charities had their registrations revoked by the state last spring. “Operators of sham charities like these prey on the generosity of New Yorkers and must be held accountable,” said New York attorney general Eric Schneiderman.
